📚 Temas principales

So my co-author Jeremy and Stevenson and I, we had this crazy project where we're like, what if we could gather all the good stuff in

0:31 self-improvement and try to cram it down into one book. But there's a big problem with that, which is there's so much stuff, how could you possibly make sense of it all? So our idea was, can we find the underlying psychological drivers behind each of the self-improvement techniques? So once we gone through over 100 self-improvement books and over 20 types of therapy and taken out every method that they had, we asked ourselves for each one, what is the psychological method behind it? And much to our surprise, we were able to boil it down to just 12 levers, which is these 12 underlying psychological strategies. And

Questions & Answers

Common questions about this video

What did Spencer Greenberg learn from researching nearly 500 self-improvement strategies?

He and his co-author found that the techniques could be grouped under 12 underlying psychological strategies, which they call the 12 levers. 0:31

Why can a self-help strategy work brilliantly for one person but not for someone else?

Strategies are contextual: their effectiveness depends on the person, the situation, the timing, and how they are applied. A success story may be genuine without meaning that the same strategy will work for everyone. 1:02

What is the ABC technique for understanding a difficult situation?

ABC stands for activating event, beliefs, and consequences. Identify what happened, what you thought about it, and the emotional or behavioral consequences; tracking these can reveal patterns you might otherwise miss. 10:17

What habit-building techniques showed promise in Greenberg’s study?

Writing down a habit and putting the note somewhere visible helped some people remember it. Having a tiny version of the habit for difficult days also helped maintain the routine. The most promising technique was habit reflection: recall a habit you succeeded at, write down what helped, and apply those lessons to a new habit. 21:06

How can exposure therapy help someone work through a fear?

Gradually face the feared situation in manageable steps, while avoiding safety behaviors that can teach your brain that you are safe only when you perform those behaviors. For example, someone afraid of flying who checks the weather obsessively may learn that flying is safe only when the weather is perfect. 28:47

What is worry time, and how can it help with overthinking?

Choose a time during the day to worry, and write down each worry when it comes up rather than dwelling on it immediately. When that time arrives, review the worries and then shift toward making an action plan. This can help show that you have some control over worry and that repetitive worrying is not always useful. 44:47

How does Greenberg define healthy productivity?

He describes productivity as time multiplied by efficiency and importance. Healthy productivity means using time effectively on work that matters according to your values, rather than focusing only on producing more of one kind of output. 55:44

What is one of the most important but often overlooked lessons in self-help?

Reading about techniques is not enough: you have to make time to use them. Learning can feel like progress, but a strategy will not change your life until you put it into practice. 22:30
